<p>This story, Carole Marsh’s first, is about two kids who visit Bath, North Carolina, and learn about Blackbeard while searching for a missing play prop. </p>

<p>After summarizing and discussing the story, we created our own alliterative pirate names – getting things like ‘Bones Bradsher’ and ‘Red Rackham.’ Then we talked about piratical weapons – because pirates were heavily armed men, of course, for all of their marauding – and the boys drew cutlasses on big pieces of cardboard. We cut out each one and wrapped the blades in duct tape to make silvery weapons, which the boys promptly used to chase each other around the yard. I think they enjoyed posing for the above picture more than any other in the history of book club. </p>

<p>Next we ‘found’ a map of the neighborhood and a rhymed message. It was a treasure hunt! Although nobody is really sure whether Blackbeard ever buried or hid any of his plunder, since the entire book was a hunt, we couldn’t not do the same. The boys unraveled the message and took off across the neighborhood in search of Blackbeard’s gold, traversing the streets several times before finally finding a pouch of golden, chocolate coins. Yum!</p>
