Susan May Warren’s books never fail to excite me, and the books involving Deep Haven are my favorite! Catch up on the whole family in Have Yourself a Christiansen Christmas. Here’s what it’s all about:
It’s Christmas in the winter wonderland town of Deep Haven, and the Christiansen kids are all heading home for the holidays. But no one feels very merry.
- Grace is worried about her husband’s life-changing illness…
- Eden is facing devastating news…
- Casper is in over his head (of course!)…
- Amelia is dodging a walk down the aisle…
- Owen…well, Owen just nearly died, again…
- But it’s Darek who has news that just might destroy the family legacy.
The trip home for all is filled with secrets, memories and old dreams. But when they discover the real reason they’ve been asked home for the holidays, it will shake their world. It’ll take a disaster for them to discover that home is the place for answers, hope and most of all…miracles.
You can’t go wrong with a Deep Haven book, and Susan May Warren penned the perfect update novel in Have Yourself a Christiansen Christmas! Visit with your favorite fictional family while you get in the holiday spirit – this book will have you looking forward to Christmas cookies and fireside chats with your relatives all while journeying into new territory with the Christiansen kids.
Those kids may be adults, most of whom have their own families now, but that doesn’t make them exempt from mistakes – or from needing advice from their parents. I love the way that Warren has extended each of the previous novels’ plots into this new book, intertwining them with each other to create a new story. This highlights her creative talent but also her willingness to up the stakes because she really puts the Christiansens in some tough situations in this one!
That part was a bit hard for me in the beginning. I love these characters, and while some of them have previously come to terms with their personal struggles, they didn’t go away – and they came back with a vengeance in this story. That tough-read aspect was only increased by the fact that all of the Christiansens were having issues at the very same time! The light soon started to shine, though, and while I couldn’t always guess correctly about what was coming, I trusted Warren to give us some sort of happy ending – and she did that in spades.
That is part of the lesson of this story, though: are we willing to trust God with our struggles and our hard times? Will we hang in there when the going is the worst and when the road before us is ugly? Coming on the heels of the pandemic we’ve all been living through, this is a timely and much-needed lesson – and Have Yourself a Christiansen Christmas is a fun way to explore that theme.
