Growing up, goody-two-shoes Kirra Jacobs and troublemaker Reef McKenna were always at odds. Now paired together on Yancey’s search-and-rescue canine unit, they begin to put aside old arguments as they come to see each other in a different light.
Then a call comes in from the Iditarod that will push them to their limits. Kirra’s uncle, a musher in the race, has disappeared. Kirra and Reef quickly track the man, but what they discover is harrowing. Frank’s daughter has been kidnapped. In order to save her, the man must use his knowledge as a mechanical engineer to do the kidnapper’s bidding or she will die.
Kirra and Reef, along with the entire McKenna family, are thrown into a race to stop a shadowy villain who is not only threatening a girl’s life, but appears willing to unleash one of the largest disasters Alaska has ever seen.
Sabotaged is the perfect ending to the Alaskan Courage series. It’s full of dangerous weather conditions, violent criminals, and chase scenes that criss-cross the Alaskan wilderness. Throw in the simmering love story between Kirra and Reef, along with Kirra’s mysteriously painful past, and you’ve got an intriguing book.
I love the idea of the Iditarod as the setting. With that iconic race in the backdrop, history looms large, merging past and present to create a truly unique perspective. Putting the McKennas as volunteers and workers for the race helps the reader to understand the vast amount of planning and resources that goes into pulling off an event of this magnitude.
Reef made a cool leading man, and a very different kind than the others in his family. Instead of always having been a stand-up guy, Reef is on a personal and spiritual journey to grow as a man. I love the McKenna family, but they have few flaws. Reef’s struggle to overcome his make it easier to relate to him; they bring him to life in a very real way.
I’m sorry to see this series end. I love that my husband and I could pass these adventures back and forth. I love stepping outside my normal life and flying through the extreme adventures of the McKenna family. I don’t want to say goodbye to them – but I can’t wait until Pettrey releases her next book.
