Any book that takes place in Susan May Warren’s Deep Haven is going to be a winner in the character department. That’s just a given – and Can’t Buy Me Love is no different.
With that said, Adrian feels a bit different from your typical Warren hero. He’s crazy rich but doesn’t have the total support of his family, which feels off for Deep Haven, but that’s okay – because the Christiansen family is there for the rescue. I loved this integration of old and new characters!
While Adrian feels like someone from a fairy tale, Ella fits right in to Deep Haven. She’s quirky and intense but friendly and likeable, and I love her business idea! I felt horrible at the things that kept happening to her in the beginning of the story – because it really felt as if it was all happening to her without her really having a say in it all – but I loved her attitude throughout. It’s hard to remain positive in the face of adversity, but Ella’s character has much to say, both verbally and through her actions.
The authors made great spiritual connections with the Cinderella premise. I love the way that the story was told in such a way as to be fun but with flawed characters on a journey that everyone can relate to.
By the end of the story I was totally on board with Adrian and Ella. I love their story and was sure that I knew how it was all going to end. Sadly, I was wrong; but I think that some of my incorrect ideas are going to connect to the next book in the series, so it will be really cool to see how those things play out. As for the others? Christenson will definitely keep you on your reader toes for this one.
All told, Can’t Buy Me Love is a fun read for those who want to return to Deep Haven.
