How to Fall in Love with Watercolor Art - A Nest in the Rocks

How to Fall in Love with Watercolor Art

I love art and colors and all things creative – but I’m not very technical, so I have a lot of trouble making things come out the way I picture them in my head – especially watercolor art.

That’s why I was so excited for the opportunity to review the Emily Lex Watercolor Classes and Package! Whether you know a lot or nothing at all, you’re sure to find something new and fun within these courses. Read on for information about how to win your own Emily Lex bundle of beauty!

How to Fall in Love with Watercolor Art

There are three Emily Lex watercolor classes: Simplified Penmanship, Simplified Watercolor, and Watercolor for Kids. The Simplified series runs $49/course, while the Watercolor for Kids is $29. I feel that the ‘simplified’ title is accurate because Lex does keep things simple, but that’s the beauty of it: with simple materials and creative ideas, she creates art that is perfect for displaying, gifting, or sharing.

I love lettering, so I focused on that course. I didn’t have time to take all the classes in all the courses, so I took more in this one than the others, and then hopped around a bit to see what they’re all like. I also looked at the beginning and ending to see the progression of skills and variety of work.

What I discovered is that I don’t like hopping around and just want to sit down with my kids and start creating! Each course starts with an introductory video and then one to teach about the types of materials to use. Following that are a few technique videos and then videos to teach you how to make a specific project. Each project video includes new skills.

The penmanship class really is very simple, starting with examining your own handwriting and practicing it a lot. I wish that this particular class had more instruction about how to vary or improve one’s own writing, but the following videos do include some of that.

The Simplified Penmanship course from Emily Lex helps you create your own unique signature.

The watercolor videos show many ways about how to be creative with simple watercolor techniques and how to turn your work into a finished product that could be framed, gifted, or made into something unique. I really liked the practicality of this aspect of it – and that we can spend time doing something creative and fun but also have a very purposeful, practical use for our work.

Each course includes downloadable pdfs to further your study, and they also include several bonus lessons and downloads, too. I’m really excited about all of them: painting the bird with my kids, practicing with the watercolor coloring book, and then turning those into gifts.

The two watercolor courses do include a small bit of overlap; the basic materials, techniques, and some of the bonus materials are duplicated. That’s not a big deal to me, though, since it is using the same art form.

Lex’s style is very conversational in tone. The videos feel less like a class and more like a friend is sharing her favorite hobby. They are edited to keep things moving but they do include flubs, erasures, etc., putting me in mind of Bob Ross’ “happy trees” and showing that even real artists don’t immediately create perfect art – that they, too, go through a process. I really like the relaxed vibe and friendly feel of each one.

Even though I thought I would be most excited about the penmanship class, it’s the watercolor ones that I can’t wait to continue. The pieces are colorful and fun, and I can see my kids and I enjoying lots of happy painting time this summer.

After watching some of the watercolor videos, I decided to try the monogram piece. As I was happily painting away at the kitchen table, My Big Helper decided to come and paint with me. While she chose to use the same technique with a heart instead of a letter, it was the same idea – and it was fun to paint together.

Watercolor Workbooks from Emily Lex

While the classes are certainly a highlight of what I received, that’s not all. Included are two bound artbooks: one about animals and one about flowers. The style of these books is really unique for an adult, watercolor book, and it’s quite impressive. Each book features a series of pieces that you can practice and complete spread out over several pages. The first page includes a sample with a list of directions. The next page includes a light sketch of the piece, so that you can paint immediately. The next two pages are blank so that you can try it for yourself. The best part? The whole thing is done with watercolor paper, so you can get really great results!

Scripture Art Cards from Emily Lex

ALSO included were two packages of scripture art cards, one for adults and one for kids. Each heavy-duty card includes a pretty watercolor image with a scripture verse beneath. There are 31 cards in each package, and mine came with a beautiful brass holder for displaying them individually. I’m loving seeing them and enjoy choosing the perfect card for the day!
